CHAPTER 31

SOPHIA

Sophia had been foolish to assume that things would get better after they left that house. Things were supposed to get better.

They were free from those people, they’d defeated those people, the demigoddesses were together, Iridessa had left the shrine, Carmeleta had gotten her power…things should be perfect. Why were things slowly falling apart around them?

Sophia had been delusional to think that Iridessa would stay with her. Part of Sophia had thought since she was already away from the shrine…why not stay a little longer? Sophia had somehow deluded herself that Iridessa would want to spend time with her. Why had she thought that?

She rushed us out of the shrine, Sophia thought. She’d never wanted to see me…she just wants me to go to Godstown and destroy the machine.

“That’s too flashy,” Seraphina scolded. “Dessa will hate it.”

Delphine was wearing Iridessa’s face, which didn’t sit well with Sophia. Delphine had the wrong mannerisms, it was a mockery. Sophia just wished that Iridessa would have come herself.

“This will be a nice color on her,” Delphine argued, turning slightly to show off the ruby red dress that spun slightly at her knees.

“She’ll hate it,” Seraphina reiterated.

“Well, it’s not my fault that she has no taste,” Delphine snapped.

This had been going on for what felt like hours. They’d been at this so long that Mordecai had long ago left with Carmeleta to go walk around some other shops. Sophia would’ve preferred to go with them, but she felt obliged to stay and help pick out clothes for Iridessa.

Why does it matter, Sophia thought. She won’t love me if I pick out nice dresses for her…

“Alright, fine,” Delphine scoffed. “Go find some dresses that look like plain nightgowns.”

Seraphina smirked, and she turned to wade back into the racks of too flashy dresses. Sophia didn’t think much of anything in this store was going to be to Iridessa’s liking.

Delphine leaned forward, to adjust the skirt of her dress, scoffing as she pushed her long hair out of her face and muttered, “How does she do anything with all this hair?”

As Sophia sat there, she found her mind drifting. It wasn’t just Iridessa that was causing this unease. What about Lucas?

He thinks you hate him, Delphine had said.

Sophia didn’t hate him. She was hurt, but she didn’t hate him. She wished he’d simply sat down with them and discussed this.

Sophia wanted to understand what he’d done and why he’d done it. Sophia wanted to hear his side of this. Delphine said he’d never had any ill intention towards them, that he’d simply wanted to be the lie he was living.

Mordecai was too harsh on him, she thought.

She didn’t blame Mordecai, he was hurt and he’d reacted because of that. She didn’t know how she’d have reacted if she had been the one in that basement.

“What about this?” Seraphina asked, holding up a plain baby blue dress that was quite modest and a bit long.

“That’s hideous,” Delphine gasped.

“Well, try it on,” Seraphina encouraged, holding the dress towards Delphine.
